Chapter 4: The Other Side of the Story

Hey guys, this chapter is basically Cal's view of chapter 2 and 3 but most importantly, the results of Cindy and Nate's fight. Enjoy!

THROUGH THE EYES OF CAL
_______________________________________________

[RECESS TIME, DAY OF THE TEDDY BEAR]

I can't help thinking about little teddy-Nate, it was the cutest thing I'd ever seen. It was holding a heart which said 'I Love You'. He probably didn't mean it that way though. Ah, cute thing.

I walked over to the counter to get a burger. I waited in line, hoping I could have the chance to see Nate. I grabbed my cheeseburger and walked to the cashier. I looked around for him and banged into someone.

Obviously, cliche-ly, it was Nate. LOL. It felt awkward for awhile, then finally we walked opposite ways. I almost forgot to get a soda. At the drinks counter, Julie, Alex, Apple and Ashley caught me.

"Hey, so, I heard about the teddy," Ashley nudged me.
"Yeah, he loves you," Julie teased.
     "Oh, shut up," I blushed.
"Aw, come on. Isn't it obvious he likes you?" Sis sort-of inclined.
"No. And I'm hungry so leave me to eat in peace, please," I paid and left as they told me,
"Okay, fine. Catch up to 'ya later,"

I stumbled to our usual table. For some reason, Cindy came to me...

     "Hey, Cal,"
"Hey," I looked up to see her.
     "Well, bye,"
"Bye? Okay, bye.." What in the world? Hi, bye? Strange girl...

[NEXT DAY, AFTER SCHOOL, FYI, IT WAS A FRIDAY]

I went to my locker to put back all my books and to take out my homework. As I put in my Ad-Maths workbook, my English Literature textbook fell to the ground, giving out a 'splat'.

I reached out for it but someone beat me to it.
"Clumsy Cal," Ashley mumbled when she passed it to me.
     "Is there any other Cal?"
     "How about Nate-lover Cal?"
     "Shut up, dude,"
"I am NOT a dude, I am a dudet. Plus, when are you gonna 'make your move'?"
"Make my move?" I questioned her 'insightful' plan, "Really?"
"Yeah, why don't you ask him to lunch or something?"
"I bet he has better things to do,"
"Okay, okay. Whatever Miss-Wait-Around," she turned around and walked away.

Hmm, lunch? Actually, why not? I better hurry to ask him. What if he has other plans? Ah, who cares.

I slammed my locker shut and ran out the front doors. Cindy was standing in front of him, facing away from me. He on the other hand, waved to me.

"Hi, Cal!" he smiled. Cindy turned around.
"Hey, wanna grab some pasta at Kitchen Creatures?" I hoped for the answer I wanted.
"Sure," YES! I grabbed his hand and ran off school grounds to Kitchen Creatures which was just a few blocks down. I heard the faint sound of Cindy's voice. I bet she was screaming. Double LOL.

[AT HOME, AFTER LUNCH, STILL EXCITED]

I was reading a book while lying upside-down on my bed. Guess what? I was listening to my iPod too. Paramore's the BEST. And Demi Lovato. And Selena too, I guess. I felt my phone vibrating on my tummy, I couldn't help but laugh. It was so ticklish but it was the only way I'd answer when using my iPod.

     "Yallo?" I asked.
"Hey, do you and Apple want to get your karaoke on?"
"Hold on," I held the phone to my chest and screamed aloud, "HEY SIS, YOU FEEL LIKE KARAOKE-ING?"
     "WHAT?"
     "DO YOU FEEL LIKE KA-RA-O-KE-ING?"
     "I CAN'T HERE YOU!"
"DO. YOU. FEEL. LIKE. SINGING. KARAOKE?!?!?!"
"I HONESTLY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU'RE RAMBLING ABOUT!"

I sighed and got up and walked to her room. She was reading too. We both LOVE Twilight!

"Do you want to go out for karaoke?"
     "Why not?"
"Yeah, okay, we're game," I told Alex who was still on the phone.
     "Cool,"
     "What time?"
     "Meet us in... 10?"
     "Minutes?"
     "Duh,"
"Kay, bye," I hung up and got changed. We only went to Red Box for karaoke so discussing the location was not necessary.

[ARRIVING AT RED BOX]

"CAL?" I heard Nate. Yay, Nate!
     "Nate!" I alarmedly screeched.
"Hey, Cal," Cindy looked bugged when she greeted me.
     "Hey," I said fast.
"Go on, ask him," sis shoved me forward slightly. I had mixed emotions on doing that, on one hand there'll be Nate, on the other, we're SO not alone. And that includes Cindy.
"Nate, wanna join us?" Oops, I'm supposed to say, 'Guys, wanna join us?'
     "Sure,"
     "Nate!" Cindy yelled.
     "What?!" he snapped back.
"You keep leaving me behind! For... HER! Why do you like hanging out with that SKEEZE so much?" Skeeze? How insulting...
"You know what, Cindy? You've been really uptight these few days, I think you need to just sit back in your quite dark cell and get some rest!" Nate looked fierce.

We checked in and then it got REALLY awkward.

"Hey, you okay?" I asked him, the troubled Nate.
"You think I was too harsh, don't you?" he replied with a question.
"I think it was just a slip of the tongue,"
     "A lethal one,"
"It's okay. She'll understand when you explain,"
"Just the matter of what to explain," he muttered under his breath.
     "What?"
     "Nothing,"

[NEXT MONDAY, BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS, BY NATE'S LOCKER]

I wonder if Nate's okay. Things got a little rough on Friday...

     "Hey," I gleefully smiled.
     "Yeah...." he 'moaned'.
     "Why so glum?"
"Come on, don't act so blind. You know what I said to Cindy was cruel," he frowned.
     "Then talk to her, apologize,"
"UGH, would YOU talk to someone who said you lived in a dark, lonely cell ?"
     "No, b-"
     "SEE?" he cut me off.
"Why you getting so pissed at me?" Yeesh.
     "I'm sorry, very sorry. Really,"
"Maybe I should talk to her for you,"
     "You'd do that?"
     "Of course,"
"Thank you SO SO SO SO SO much."

[RECESS TIME, CAFETERIA, CINDY TIME]

Okay, time to talk to Cindy. Be careful, Cal. At a time like this, either one of them could explode.

     "Hey, Cindy,"
"Why are YOU talking to me, what, gonna steal my actual interest in life too?"
"What? No, I just came here to tell you that Nate wants to apologise. Why are you so mad at me?"
"Duh, everytime YOU come around, I become invisible and suddenly you're Nate's world,"
     "What are you talking about?"
"I'm talking about the fact that I asked him to join me for lunch but YOU got him!"
     "You asked him to lunch?"
"Yeah! Right before you stole him away!"
     "I didn't know-"
"It doesn't matter now anyway, he doesn't notice a thing,"
"What do you mean doesn't notice a thing?"
"No matter how flirty you get, he's blind to it. All he sees us as are competitive friends,"
"What flirty? I don't like him," *trembling*
"No matter how many times you say that, it's not true. Look, as long as its not said straight, he'll never think once about us differently,"
"You said us! So you do like him!"
"Don't change the subject. Let me just give it to you straight, I don't like him, you're crazy about him and he's as blind as a snake is deaf. Get it?" She got up from her seat and trotted away. I wonder what that was all about. Huh.

[BUSINESS STUDIES CLASS]

AH, I'm so caught up about what Cindy said. Should I finally tell him? You know, that I like him? Oh, stop fantasizing about it.

But then again, Ash was right when she told me to ask him out. It worked really well. Maybe he has feelings for me. And maybe, just maybe, at the same time, I'M REARING UNICORNS! (BTW, she is scolding herself for fantasizing) Yeah, of course, and when do we get together?

WHEN DOVES SWIM! But I guess, I rather regret doing it than wondering my whole life about the world where he knew and what would he do. Yeah, I'm SO gonna regret this. I took out a piece of paper from my memo pad which I was supposed to be writing down crucial notes.

     Dear Nate,
I hope you don't react weirdly to this but the truth is,
     I really like you.

I hope it works. Cause I'm living la vida loca... definitely loca.

[LUNCH TIME, EARLY CLASS RELEASE]

Coincidentally, our class ended early today so we have like 7 minutes of extra lunch time. I ran to Nate's locker and slipped in the note. I'll I can do now is pray and wait.

Nate's class was released not too long later. Realising that, I walked aside and acted natural. He went to his locker and here it comes...

As he stared at the note I stepped closer and closer, then finally someone broke the silence.

"YOU like HIM?" I heard Carl gasping. Darn, I didn't think about the liabilities...
"Shut up!" I turned around and saw Alison, Nate's sis, standing there. OH MY GOSH, she heard CARL!!! "Look what you did! His sister is right there..."

AAAAAHHH!!! WHAT DO I DO? WHAT DO I DO? WHAT DO I FREAKING DO?! SOMEONE, HELP ME!!! THIS IS NOT GOOD, THIS IS HORRIBLE! I KNEW I'D REGRET THIS! WHY DID I EVEN TRY? MY LIFE IS RUINED! ALISON KNOWS A LOT OF PEOPLE, SHE'S POPULAR! IF SHE TELLS, THEN I-I, I'M DOOMED!!!!!

I started to beat up Carl then gave up so I ran off. AAAAAHHH!!!

[AFTER SCHOOL, AT HOME, STILL SCARED OF LIFE]

I have to think of something, something, something, something, something, something, something, something, something, something, something, anything... ah, I'm empty.

When in doubt, siren the sis.

"Hey Appi, what would you tell someone if you did something out of the ordinary but regretted it?" I asked as casually as possible, holding back my shiver of fear.
"That's easy. I'd tell them someone dared me," Dared me! Of course! It's genius!
"Thanks bye," I quickly turned around to get my phone from my room.
     "Wait, why?" Darn...
"What? I can't hear you!" I continued walking, hehehe, sweet revenge.

I got to my room and hopped onto my bed, my phone almost falling off. I quickly called Nate to tell him.

     "Hi Nate!,"
"Uh, Cal? Care to explain something?"
     "Like?"
"Slapping Carl sore, for one matter?"
"Oh, sorry bout that. I got a little freaked after he 'announced' that I like you," *shiver*
     "But actually... do you?"
"All I can say's that, truthfully, it was a dare,"
     "Oh, it was a dare,"
"Yeah, I'm not supposed to tell you that it is but, would you mind explaining that to Alison?"
     "Sure, sure. Why not?"
     "Thanks a bunch!"
     "Bye."

Problem solved. I'm living la vida loca!

[THREE DAYS LATER]

"So, still up for a little girl time at Chocolate?"
"Of course, Cindy. I'm just a little depressed that my sis can't go,"
     "Bummer, she's a real joy,"
     "She got stuck in tuition,"
     "For?"
     "Maths,"
"But I thought that was her ace subject?"
"Yeah but apparently someone cut curfew the night before the test,"
     "Apple?"
"I saw it with my own eyes, she was so sugar high, she actually screamed 'I'm a rebel!' then jumped out the window,"
"Sigh, only Apple can go that crazy,"
     "You bet'cha."

Ah, good times, good times. I wish I had less homework, that way I can go crazy like Apple. It must be fun. I remember our 'Sister Night', gosh, our neighbours filed a law suit.

[THAT AFTERNOON, AT CHOCOLATE CAFE/BISTRO]

I'm starting to wonder, how did Cindy and I stop rivaling? I guess it's cause she's in a mess with Nate so she has no one else much she wants to hang with. Huh, when the Sun collides with the planet, well, actually, I don't know...

"Hey, just randomly asking, what's going on between you and Nate?"
     "Oh, I, uh, nothing much,"
"He is really sorry you know,"
"You think I should just accept his apology?"
"He'd love it, even if you were 25 years late,"
     "I am kinda late,"
     "It's okay."

-Cindy's view- [Ending]

I got out my handphone and got up and walked a few feet away. I dialed in his number and waited for him to pick up.

"Cindy?" I haven't heard his voice in some time.
"Right here. I need to tell you something first,"
     "Of course, go ahead,"
"I'm transferring to Roosevelt Boarding School,"
     "But-, I mean, where?"
     "Arizona,"
"At least its not too far,"
     "Where are you transferring to?"
     "Lyndon Institute in Vermont,"
"Vermont? That's all the way across the country!"
"I know, I know, but Vermont was named the smartest state in 2005 and 2006. My parents really want me to attend a school there,"
     "Alright then,"
     "Sad eh?"
     "Bye?"
     "Bye. We're okay?"
     "Yes, we're okay."

**************************

PHEW! I spent like 4-5 hours STRAIGHT on this, slept THEN CONTINUED FOR LIKE 2 HOURS! By the way, the schools are real. Cindy's school name isn't though but it's based on one. And FYI, the story takes place in California. YOU BETTER ENJOY IT!
